WJLA’s Maureen Bunyan Re-Ups In Multi-Year Deal

On Friday, Sinclair Broadcast Group’s ABC affiliate WJLA Washington (DMA 8) signed a multi-year deal with anchor Maureen Bunyan that will keep her behind the news desk for years to come.

Bunyan is a 45-year veteran of television news. She is a founder of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the International Women’s Media Foundation.

She has been honored for her work by the top professional journalism organizations in the nation. She has been inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame of the Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the “Silver Circle” of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She is the winner of seven Emmy Awards for news broadcasting.

She attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Columbia University School of Journalism and holds a Master’s Degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She was born in Aruba and grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin.  She is of Guyanese descent.

In June, 2014, Bunyan was knighted by H.R.H. Willem Alexander of the Netherlands and inducted into The Order of Orange-Nassau, a Dutch chivalric order. A native of the Dutch island of Aruba, she received the honor in recognition of her “exemplary contributions to society.”
