CBS O&Os Make Atlanta, Detroit Exec Moves

Tom Canedo to rejoin WUPA as GM; current WUPA Station Manager Tim Bennett will remain in Atlanta as VP-sales manager, southeast region for CBS National Spot Sales. Brian Watson named VP-station manager and sales director at WWJ-WKBD in Detroit.

Veteran CBS Television Stations general manager Tom Canedo will be moving from the group’s Detroit (DMA 13) stations, WWJ and WKBD (CW), to Atlanta, where he be president and general manager of CW affiliate WUPA. The announcement was made today by Canedo, who has been the general manager of CBS’s Detroit stations since October 2012, will be returning to Atlanta (DMA 9), where he previously spent 13 years with WUPA and, prior to that, five years with WGCL, the Atlanta CBS affiliate.

Current WUPA Station Manager Tim Bennett, a veteran of more than 20 years in the Atlanta market, will remain at the station and work closely with Canedo. In addition, as VP and sales manager at the CBS Television Stations’ national spot sales office in Atlanta, Bennett will continue to lead the station group’s sales team that serves clients in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Florida.

“Tom is a talented executive who has done an outstanding job of leading our stations in Detroit during the past four years,” said Peter Dunn, president, CBS Television Stations.

“Even more importantly, he is a devoted husband and father. When Tom came to me and asked if he could continue his career with CBS in Atlanta — the place he, his wife Yvette, and their children have called home for nearly 20 years — we were happy to honor his request.”

“We’re thankful that this will be a smooth transition for everyone involved,” Dunn added. “Tom and Tim have a great history of working together and achieving success in Atlanta. Given WUPA’s standing as one of the top CW affiliates in the country and the importance of our Atlanta-based national sales efforts, we’re thrilled to have two of our finest leaders back together and under the same roof.”

Brian Watson, an 18-year CBS Television Stations veteran, has been appointed VP-station manager and director of sales at WWJ and WBKD. Watson, who has served as the Detroit duopoly’s VP of sales since 2012, will report to Dunn and Jim Sullivan, president of sales, CBS Television Stations.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Prior to joining the CBS’s Detroit stations, Watson spent 14 years at WUPA, where he began as an account executive and was promoted to local sales manager in 2000 and national sales manager in 2001.
