WNEU Boston Rebrands, Adds 2 Newscasts
Telemundo-owned WNEU Boston (DMA 10) is rebranding its weekday newscasts from Noticiero Telemundo Boston to Noticiero Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra (Telemundo New England News), effective immediately.
In addition, WNEU will launch two, new 30–minute newscasts that will air Monday-Friday at 5 and 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday, Dec. 18. This news expansion follows two years after WNEU launched Boston’s first live, local weekday newscasts for Spanish–speaking audiences at 6 and 11 p.m. in August 2015.
Anchored by Grace Gomez at 5 p.m. and José A. Rivera Adrovet at 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m., Noticiero Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra will provide local breaking news, weather forecasts, sports and entertainment information to Spanish-speaking audiences in Boston on WNEU and on WRDM Hartford, Conn.
“We launched WNEU two years ago to help fill a void in the market and better serve Boston’s Spanish-speaking audiences. Expanding our news programming to deliver one more hour of news each day to our local viewers while increasing our coverage area to span all of New England, is the perfect next step in our station’s evolution and growth,” said Mike St. Peter, WNEU president-GM.
Adrovet joined WNEU in 2015. Grace Gomez joined WNEU in 2015 as a multimedia journalist and will take the anchor desk at 5 p.m. on weekdays. Adrovet and Gomez will be joined by Weather Anchor Cecy del Carmen, who also joined WNEU in August 2015. Sports anchor Pedro Castro Amare joined Telemundo Boston in 2016. Multimedia journalists Arianne Alcorta, Betsy Badell and Jorge Ernesto Viñals will be based in Newton, Mass., and deliver Boston-area news.
Juan Carlos Meauri joins NBCUniversal as reporter after working as reporter/anchor for several stations including Univision Orlando in Central Florida, Mundo Fox and Mira TV. He will be based in WRDM in West Hartford and contribute Hartford and Connecticut news reports.
Earlier this month, the Telemundo Station Group and ZGS Communications, Inc. (ZGS) announced they entered into agreements that, once the necessary FCC and other governmental approvals are obtained, will result in the Telemundo Station Group acquiring Telemundo affiliate stations owned by ZGS that serve 10 markets, including WRDM Hartford, Conn. WRDM Telemundo will be operated by WVIT through a local marketing agreement beginning Jan. 1, 2018 until the Telemundo Station Group and ZGS close on their transaction and a channel-sharing agreement between WRDM and WVIT goes into effect. WRDM Telemundo will be co-located with WVIT in NBC Connecticut’s news facility located in West Hartford, Conn.
