Apple is planning to unveil a renewed focus on the living room with an upgraded Apple TV set-top box that can stream 4K video and highlight live television content such as news and sports, according to people familiar with the matter.
It’s dominated by sporting events. The satcaster, which has a dedicated channel for live events in 4K (ch. 106), will air the Daniel Comier-Jon Jones UFC light heavyweight championship in 4K on PPV. The event, which will begin this Saturday (July 29) at 10 p.m. ET, will cost $69.99 for the 4K feed; the HD edition will be $59.99. In addition, starting Tuesday, DIRECTV has nine Major League Baseball games scheduled in 4K. They will all air on ch. 106.

NASA will give Earth dwellers the first live-streaming look at 4K Ultra HD video from space, in an event co-produced with Amazon Web Services. The U.S. space agency will present the free live-stream during a session at the NAB Show on April 26 in Las Vegas. The live feed from 250 miles above Earth will be encoded with Amazon Web Services’ Elemental encoding software on board the International Space Station and on the ground at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Verizon says the company is conducting trials of 4K content delivery with a satellite company by the name of SES. The company gives little to no detail on when the trials will begin, but says the trial will involve test delivery of nine smaller channels to begin: NASA TV, 4K Universe, C4K60, Fashion One 4K, Insight, Nature Relaxation, Travelxp 4K, UHD1 and an SES demonstration channel.

It’s been almost two years since Comcast promised to launch its 4K UHD and HDR set-tops, yet as the first quarter of 2017 rolls to an end, those boxes are still missing in action. The reason? Comcast doesn’t just want to offer a 4K UHD service, it wants that service to include high dynamic range (HDR) technology and 10 bit HEVC encoding for greater color precision.
The NBA in 4K has finally arrived in the U.S. NBA TV and DirecTV delivered UHD coverage of two games, one on Nov. 22 and the other on Dec. 3, with Altitude Sports and Mobile TV Group producing both the HD and 4K feeds out of one truck.
YouTube now supports 4K live-streaming, allowing content creators to broadcast using high-resolution video in both 360-degree and standard video formats at a rate of 60 frames per second.
