The veteran newsman, who announced his retirement last month, had said only that he would be leaving this summer. But summer’s coming early for Schieffer, who wants to relax for the warm weather months while CBS gives his successor, John Dickerson, the chance to settle in before the presidential campaign begins in earnest, so his last day will be May 31.

The head of Hearst’s independent outlet for the past 17 years will step down in June. “Ken’s enthusiasm, creativity and innovative spirit have been instrumental in turning WMOR into a powerhouse independent station,” said Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb.

A former newspaper reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Bob Schieffer joined CBS News in 1969 and has been the network’s chief Washington correspondent since 1992. He began at the political affairs show “Face the Nation” in 1991, asking direct questions to politicians in a Texas twang.

Bob Ramsey, Weigel Broadcasting’s EVP of local media, announced to his staff last week that he plans on retiring later this year. A search is now on for his replacement. Sometime this summer, he will step away from his day-to-day duties and work as a consultant for the company, helping with the transition of new leadership.

John A. Walsh, a fixture at ESPN since 1988, will retire Feb. 1, sources there confirm. No reason was given for the move by the EVP and executive editor. A veteran sports journalist, Walsh is chairman of ESPN’s editorial board and helped launched ESPN The Magazine and ESPN Radio.

Cathy Pircsuk, GM and divisional VP of WWNY (CBS)-WNYF-CA (Fox) Watertown, N.Y., announced that she will retire in June. Starting in the news department as a reporter on Jan. 8, 1979, she became the station’s top manager in 1996. She had progressed as a news anchor, assignment editor, news director and station manager. Pircsuk’s 36-year career with WWNY spans almost two-thirds of the station’s 60-year history.
