Ryan Seacrest, CAA and AEG are folding their hopes of a new network into a plan to relaunch and rebrand Mark Cuban’s HDNet as a new, pop-culture oriented network called AXS TV.

Seacrest is not signed beyond this season of the Fox hit and is also involved in talks with corporate owners of NBC Universal, where he has a contract at E! Entertainment. There have been several reports that NBC is considering Seacrest as a potential replacement if Matt Lauer decides to leave the Today show.

NBCUniversal is pursuing American Idol host Ryan Seacrest as a possible successor to Matt Lauer on the Today show, if Lauer vacates his co-anchor seat next year, say people close to the company.

TV icon Regis Philbin, 79, said five months ago that he wanted to leave Live With Regis and Kelly in November. While a decision on Philbin’s successor isn’t imminent, Disney has been considering a range of candidates, say people close to Disney-ABC Domestic Television, which distributes the show. Radio-TV personality Ryan Seacrest, 36; TV host and former Bravo executive Andy Cohen, 43; and TV host and actor Mark Consuelos, 40, are all said to be possible contenders. Consuelos is married to Philbin’s co-host, Kelly Ripa.

Ryan Seacrest is in early talks with NBC to do a music themed show. Unlike American Idol, the Ryan Seacrest Productions project is not a traditional competition show, nor is it clear that Seacrest would serve as host. At this stage, the potential series is in the preliminary stages of development, with the concept still being fleshed out.
