It’s buying the NBC affiliate from Granite Broadcasting and will run it under a TBA while awaiting FCC approval. Nexstar already owns the market’s CBS affiliate, KGPE.
Sinclair In An Acquisition State Of Mind
David Amy, the group’s CFO, tells analysts that “our philosophy has been to look toward Big 4 stations and adding on where we have an existing property. We see quite a bit of benefit or opportunity there. We’ll continue to be aggressive if and when they [opportunities] come up.”

Fox’s standard affiliation contract makes clear that Fox has the right to take back an affiliation immediately when it acquires a different station in the market. “Everybody is nervous as all get out” that Fox may have other markets in its sights, said one Fox affiliate group operator, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Fox’s Jack Abernethy said the motivation behind the Charlotte buy was to get an O&O in another NFC market.

The move is a result of Fox’s buying Capitol Broadcasting’s CW and MNT affiliates there, WJZY and WMYT. Jim Babb, EVP-COO of WCCB owner Bahakel Communications, says they were informed of the move Monday morning and are “already exploring various options.”

OTA Broadcasting, backed by computer retailing billionaire Michael Dell, agrees to buy low-power WYCN-LP Derry, N.H., from Bill Binnie, who will continue to operate the station. Binnie also owns full-power WBIN Derry. Both stations are in the Boston market.

The Communications Corp. of America station group is the latest to hang out the For Sale sign, with Houlihan Lokey looking for buyers for the 25 properties in 10 markets.
The buyer of WLWC is OTA Broadcasting, a speculator that has been buying TV stations in anticipation of reselling their spectrum to the government in an eventual auction to wireless carriers. Sinclair is the seller of the CW affiliate, which is among the seven it acquired last year from Cerberus Capital for $200 million.
New Vision veterans John Heinen, Eric Simontis, Steve Spendlove and Dennis Elkin have formed Alchemedia and are talking with private equity firms and hedge funds. They hope to begin buying stations in large and medium-size markets in the near future.

Nexstar has been an active station buyer this year. The group owner is now in 38 markets with the closing of its deal to buy 10 stations in seven markets from Newport Television.
Cox Closes On Newport Acquisitions
Cox Media Group closed on duopolies in Jacksonville, Fla., and Tulsa, Okla. Jacksonville is actually a virtual duopoly, with a proxy acquiring one of the stations. The total price tag is more than $253 million.
Deerfield LLC is buying WUTB from Fox, but has made a deal that will let Sinclair operate the MNT affiliate through joint sales and shared services agreements.Sinclair already runs Fox affiliate WBFF and CW affiliate WNUV.
Multiple sources say Barrington Broadcasting’s 24 stations in 15 markets are for sale and that Sinclair and Nexstar are finalists among the bidders.
The purchase of the NBC affiliate from Newport Television will give it an operating duopoly in the Oregon market along with its KVAL, the CBS affil.

Young Broadcasting, which is operating a CBS-MNT duopoly in Lansing, Mich., will soon make it a triopoly. It has a deal to take over the operation of WLAJ just as soon as Shield Media completes its purchase of the ABC affiliate from Sinclair for $14.4 million. Young and Shield worked together to create a duopoly for Young earlier his year in Albany, N.Y.
It acquires network affiliates in eight markets: Portland, Ore. (DMA 22); Birmingham, Ala. (DMA 39); Wichita, Kan. (DMA 67); Honolulu (DMA 71); Savannah, Ga. (DMA 92); Youngstown, Ohio (DMA 110); Topeka, Kan. (DMA 136); and Mason City, Iowa (DMA 153).
