In the wake of two prominent talk show hosts reversing course on a return to work, striking writers in New York City have stepped up their picketing against a high-profile holdout: ABC’s The View. About 50 demonstrators showed up Tuesday outside the ABC television studio complex on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and urged arriving ABC employees not to cross the picket line.
Whoopi Goldberg was absent from the Season 27 premiere episode of The View today due to yet another case of Covid, though many usual viewers throughout the country will miss the show too: The View did not air today in markets impacted by the ongoing clash between Disney and Spectrum. In New York City, for example, where the daytime series originates, viewers attempting to tune into the show were greeted with the same Spectrum message that’s been on the ABC affiliate channel all weekend: “The Walt Disney Company, owner of this channel, has removed their programming from Spectrum,” the message begins. “We offered Disney a fair deal, and yet they continue to demand an excessive increase.”
Bill Geddie, the legendary TV producer known for co-creating The View and being Barbara Walters’ longtime producer, has died at the age of 68. His death was due to coronary-related factors. Geddie served as executive producer for The View for 17 years.
The audience members, who were speaking out about climate change, were “escorted out by security,” according to a spokesperson for the ABC show.
For the second year in a row, The View is the most-watched daytime talk show across both network and syndication. The ABC series ranked No. 1 in both households and total viewers for the 2021-22 television season. Its 1.7 rating topped all other network and syndicated daytime talk shows, tying with Dr. Phil in households and netting an average of 2.411 million total viewers for the season, according to Nielsen.
Farah Griffin fills the chair left empty when Meghan McCain quit last summer after four years on the show. Farah Griffin is a communications strategist who worked as a spokesperson at the Pentagon and for Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during the last administration. Navarro, a familiar face as a frequent guest host at The View since 2015, was officially named as an addition to the show’s group of five hosts.
Former cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck is temporarily returning to The View as its resident conservative voice. Hasselbeck was on the show from 2003 to 2013, coinciding with the show’s seasons 7-16. She is expected to return on Aug. 3 as a temporary seat-filler until a permanent conservative is found.
The co-hosts of ABC’s The View on Wednesday issued an apology for statements made Monday about protesters outside an event hosted by the conservative activist group Turning Post USA. “We want to make clear that these demonstrators were outside the event and that they were not invited or endorsed by Turning Point USA,” host Sara Haines said during Wednesday’s show.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, the former Trump White House director of strategic communications, is in final talks to join The View as the new conservative co-host of the daytime talk show. Multiple sources say that ABC executives have chosen Farah Griffin, 33, to join The View for its 26th season, which kicks off in the fall.
Joy Behar’s rep has shut down rumors that the star is set to quit The View ahead of her 80th birthday in October. “Fake news,” her rep said Tuesday, revealing that Behar has signed another three-year deal with ABC. The new contract will keep her tied to the network until 2025. It’s unclear how much money ABC forked over for Behar, although it’s likely that it’s paying the controversial comedian a handsome, eight-figure sum.
The Talk, CBS’s answer to ABC’s The View, has been renewed for a 13th season, the hosts said on-air Monday and CBS later tweeted from The Talk’s Twitter feed. The Talk will return with all of this season’s hosts — Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Natalie Morales and Sheryl Underwood — coming back.
In her second day guest hosting The View, former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham opened up about why she stuck around in his administration as long as she did. Then, she outright apologized. “I messed up.”
The moderator said she and her colleagues on the ABC show would “keep having tough conversations” as she added that she listened to those who reached out to her.
ABC’s decision to suspend Whoopi Goldberg from The View for two weeks for her remarks about the Holocaust has opened the network up to criticism that its response derailed a teachable moment for the nation about a sensitive topic often misunderstood and seldom discussed on air.
The action came a day after Goldberg’s comment during a discussion on The View that race was not a factor in the Holocaust. Goldberg apologized hours later and again on Tuesday’s morning episode, but the original remark drew condemnation from several prominent Jewish leaders. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” ABC News President Kim Godwin said in a statement.

ABC’s The View is without one of its co-hosts this week, after Whoopi Goldberg tested positive for COVID-19. Joy Behar disclosed the news on the program Monday. “Whoopi unfortunately tested positive over the break, but she will hopefully be back next week,” Behar said. “Since she is vaxxed and boosted, her symptoms have been very, very mild, but we are being super cautious.”
Lisa Boothe interviewed to replace Meghan McCain as the ABC talk show’s in-house conservative. But conversations ended when she publicly refused to get any vaccines.
“Our plans are on track as we continue to look for the right person to join our panel of smart, dynamic women,” a spokesperson for the talk show said. “We look forward to welcoming guest co-hosts for return appearances and introducing new names into the mix in the new year.”
In the 25-year history of The View, Meghan McCain is one of the only co-hosts to leave on her own — without being fired. In her new memoir, Bad Republican, she decided that she had to leave The View on Jan. 5, her second day back from maternity leave. McCain had given birth to her daughter, Liberty, in September 2020, and she was suffering from severe postpartum anxiety. She experienced irrational fears that someone would kidnap or hurt her daughter, and she was terrified about being on TV again.
Two hosts of ABC’s “The View” were pulled from set during the show’s live broadcast Friday after learning that they tested positive for COVID-19. The panelists were moments away from introducing Vice President Kamala Harris to the show for an in-person interview in their New York City studio. Harris’s interview will now take place remotely from another room inside the building.
Harris will visit “The View” studio on Friday for her sixth appearance on the daytime chat show — but her first as vice president. She’ll answer questions about the pandemic, Afghanistan and other topics.
Mia Love will be the first guest host, with Condoleezza Rice, S.E. Cupp and Gretchen Carlson appearing over the next few months.
ABC’s daytime talk show The View canceled a planned appearance Wednesday by a woman who settled a sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill O’Reilly, after the former Fox News Channel personality sought and received a restraining order against her.
Meghan McCain is leaving The View, after nearly four years on the ABC daytime show, Variety has confirmed. As the panel’s resident conservative talking head, McCain regularly sparred with her co-hosts, resulting in many viral — and highly-rated — on-air moments. Her last day will be at the end of the show’s season later this summer.
CBS Panics As ‘The Talk’ Sinks In Ratings
Drama behind the scenes of daytime talk shows is heating up as Sharon Osbourne’s CBS show The Talk sinks in the ratings against ABC rival The View. CBS insiders say producers and network execs are “panicking” after The Talk’s ratings dropped to 1.5 million, half of The View’s audience of 3 million.
Sara Haines has been confirmed to return to ABC’s The View as a permanent co-host as the show returns next week for its 24th season, when a focus of the show will be on the final months of the 2020 presidential campaign. Co-host Meghan McCain plans to go on maternity leave and will be on The View at the start of the season.
Sara Haines will be returning to The View in September as a co-host for Season 24 of the ABC daytime talk show. Haines, 42, is no stranger to the Hot Topics table. She served as a View co-host for two seasons — from the fall of 2016 through the summer of 2018 — where she offered her takes on the headlines of the day, pop culture and celebrities. Prior to The View, Haines was a lifestyle anchor for GMA Weekend.
