CTA Shifts Dates For Virtual CES 2021

Next year’s CES, the world’s biggest consumer-technology trade show, has been pushed back a few days in January 2021, the Consumer Technology Association announced. CTA also announced Verizon chairman/CEO Hans Vestberg as the kickoff keynoter for the online-only event. Originally, CES 2021 was scheduled to run Jan. 6-9, 2021, in the trade show and conference’s first-ever virtual format, after the CTA canceled the in-person in Las Vegas because of the COVID pandemic. The new dates for CES 2021 will be Monday, Jan. 11, to Thursday, Jan. 14.

The online event will take place in fall 2020 and include TVNewsCheck’s TV2025 and Post|Production World Online, among other prominent conference programs. NAB says: “Our goal for the digital experience is to provide a valuable forum for the industry to restart, refocus and reengage.”

NAB: Virtual Show Attendance At 40,000+

The National Association of Broadcasters said that about 40,000 people have accessed its “inaugural” NAB Show Express online marketplace/event, which was the association’s effort to replicate, virtually, some of its canceled NAB Show. According to NAB, more than 1.6 million minutes of video has been consumed since the event launched May 13. NAB suggested it would be offering hybrid versions of physical and virtual events going forward.

Every spring CBS parades its stars and executives across the Carnegie Hall stage to try to persuade advertisers to buy commercial time during an event filled with scripted banter and sizzle reels. This year, ad buyers working from home clicked on a link that led them to a cartoon of Stephen Colbert interviewing a dog.

3.0’s New Services Could Help During Crisis

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a panel of broadcast stakeholders reported that they are proceeding to implement the U.S.’ voluntary NextGen TV broadcast transmission system, while identifying what could be potential opportunities for local broadcasters to use the new services to support their communities during the crisis. The remote panel discussion was held Thursday as part of NAB Show Express, a virtual event featuring some of the panels and content that had been planned for the 2020 NAB Show.

IAB Reveals NewFronts Virtual Lineup

The IAB has announced details for the virtual NewFront presentations in June, adding newer presenters like TikTok and Roku to a roster full of mainstays like Hulu and YouTube. The NewFronts, usually a splashy New York affair that leads up to the traditional TV upfronts in May, will be held this year will be June 22-26, with daily blocks from noon to 4 p.m. ET.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai told a virtual NAB Show audience Wednesday that their legacy public service commitment is “showing up in spades” during the pandemic. Fresh from the FCC’s May 13 public meeting, Pai was able to appear at the NAB Show Express virtual convention to be interviewed by NAB President Gordon Smith only a couple of hours later.

Panasonic Withdraws From IBC 2020

Panasonic has announced it will not be attending IBC in September. Arguably the biggest vendor so far to announce it won’t be attending the show, Panasonic said it intends to launch its own Technology Experience Zone to support its partners and customers through online initiatives.
