Some heavy storms may be headed toward the Weather Channel. DirecTV, the satellite broadcaster with more than 20 million subscribers around the country, has quietly started distributing a network called WeatherNation just as its deal to carry the Weather Channel is set to expire.
Sam Champion will anchor the Weather Channel’s new flagship morning show, which is set to debut in early 2014. His last day at Good Morning America is Wednesday. Ginger Zee will take over his weather responsibilities at GMA and across the news division.
After ramping up reality series and reducing its straight weather coverage, the cable network will now offer forecasts around the clock, even during commercials.
