Accelerating climate change and its far-flung effects have fast become the most important story in the news cycle. But that isn’t always the stuff that gets talked about or tweeted — or the biggest ratings. Now the Weather Channel is making climate change a bigger part of its overall focus. The cable network over the next several months plans to infuse climate coverage into its morning, afternoon and even entertainment programs in a way that Nora Zimmett, the outlet’s chief content officer, believes will make for reports that audiences won’t be able to ignore.
In the midst of a record revenue fiscal year fueled by an election cycle that elevated ratings, Fox News is launching a streaming weather channel and will start to sell ads on its subscription streaming service Fox Nation, where lifestyle programming might be appropriate for some advertisers. Jeff Collins, EVP, advertising sales, at Fox News Media, is looking to increase revenue again in the upcoming fiscal year and he’s counting on a dramatically changed news environment, with less emphasis on politics, to attract otherwise skittish advertisers.

The Weather Channel was knocked off the air Thursday morning by what it said was a malicious software attack on the network.
Known as “immersive mixed reality technology,” videos like The Weather Channel’s Erika Navarro’s take green screen graphics and merge them with real-time, predictive data from agencies such as the National Hurricane Center. The result is a virtual scenario that unfolds around a studio anchor, engulfing the set with terrifying realism but allowing the anchor to walk viewers through potential weather with newfound urgency.
The Weather Channel has covered the story live around the clock since 5 a.m. ET on Friday and plans to continue until 1 a.m. Saturday, if it has wound down by then. “What I’ve tried to do is not cede the story to anyone else once the forecasting has been done,” said Nora Zimmett, the channel’s SVP of programming. Traditional news outlets have relied on water-logged correspondents to tell the story of Harvey and its aftermath. Network star power has been in short supply in Texas, with NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt the biggest name on the scene early.
