This year’s Peabody Award winners included efforts by four stations. This week, the focus is on the comprehensive coverage of the Dec. 14, 2012, massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., by NBC-owned WVIT Hartford, Conn. Last week, we looked at KMGH Denver’s Investigating the Fire and KNXV Phoenix’s Ford Escape: Exposing a Deadly Defect.

Those four stations took home the prestigious awards presented annually by University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for the best in electronic media. Other honorees include CBS, ABC and PBS with two awards each, while HBO was the most honored with five citations.

The community event this Sunday will benefit Connecticut victims of Hurricane Sandy and will ask for non-perishable food, personal care items, warm coats and cash donations.

A 10-person team at the NBC-owned station will cover in-depth issues from consumer complaints to government corruption.

Detectives are investigating the placement of what looked like a Molotov cocktail outside the studio of the NBC Hartford, Conn., O&O. Police found a bottle with a rag sticking out of it, although there was no fuel in the bottle.
