Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) has written FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to stick up for Gray Television’s WWSB Sarasota, Fla., in a retrans fight with Frontier Cable. Citing a failure to reach a retrans agreement with Frontier, WWSB used some in-house news reporting last week to relay that it had been pulled from the cable system Friday (Dec. 18) after WWSB offered to keep the signal on at current terms while they continued to negotiate.
This is a move within Raycom for Hardy, who is news director at WAAY in Huntsville, Ala. The two stations are owned by Calkins, which was purchased by Raycom in April.
On Monday, Sept. 14, Calkins Media-owned ABC affiliate WWSB Tampa, Fla. (DMA 13), is will debut a news newscast. Calkins Media and its Chief Digital Officer Guy Tasaka have retooled its Amazon Fire OTT app to allow for more monetization and discovery opportunities. It has also overhauled its mobile app at WWSB Tampa, Fla., resulting in a 900% increase in video views. The revamped version has since been rolled out at Calkins’ WAAY Huntsville, Ala., and WTXL Tallahassee, Fla.

WWSB photographer Charlie Yeagley didn’t have to pack much gear in order to go live to his station in Sarasota, Fla., while covering local legend Nik Wallenda’s historic tightrope walk across the Little Colorado River Gorge near the Garnd Canyon last month. The ABC affiliate used the JVC GY-HM650’s live streaming capability to air live press conferences before and after the walk.
