Johnny Green Jr. Named GM Of WCBS-WLNY

Johnny Green Jr., journalist, producer and newsroom leader, today was appointed president and general manager of CBS News and Television Stations’ local businesses in New York City, including WCBS (CBS), WLNY (ind.), CBSN New York and CBSNewYork.com.

Green, who has been a member of the CBS family since 2015, will assume his new responsibilities on July 12. He currently is interim news director at WCBS, a role he has held since January of this year; and vice president of news services at CBS News, where he has overseen Newspath, the division’s affiliate news service, since August 2020.

Green will continue to lead the CBS New York local newsroom and Newspath on a short-term basis while the company conducts a search for his successors at WCBS and CBS News.

Prior to moving to New York last year, Green spent five years at WBZ and WSBK, the CBS-owned stations in Boston. Green joined the duopoly in 2015 as assistant news director and one year later was named vice president and news director.

Over the course of his more than 20 years in local news, his work has earned several Emmy Awards. Also, during his tenure at WBZ, the station won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.

Prior to working at WBZ and WSBK, Green was an executive producer at WCAU Philadelphia. Before that, he was an executive producer at WPXI Pittsburgh and earlier at WPDE Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Green began his career as a producer at WCTI New Bern, N.C., before stops at WCNC and WSOC in Charlotte, N.C., and WRAL Raleigh, N.C.

Green is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. He also serves on the board of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and has been a member of the Racial Equity Advisory Board in Boston. He has also served as a C-Suite member of the Partnership Organization in Boston.

Green is a South Carolina native and a graduate of North Carolina Central University in Durham.
