Emmy-Winning Documentary Series ‘In Real Life’ Returns Oct. 8

Scripps News, the 24/7 broadcast news network available over the air, begins a new season of its Emmy-winning weekly documentary series, In Real Life, on Sunday, Oct. 8. The series takes viewers to the heart of the incredible stories playing out across the world, scientific efforts to engineer the climate to the search for companionship with artificial intelligence.

“Without question, In Real Life is a signature series for Scripps News that showcases the talent on our team in front of and behind the cameras,” said Kate O’Brian, president of Scripps News. “The writing, reporting, delivery and visuals are all spectacular and benefit those watching.”

Last week, In Real Life received a National News Emmy Award in the outstanding science, technology or environmental coverage category for “Plastic Time Bomb,” which presented a global exploration of microplastics’ impact on our planet and on our health — and what scientists are doing to help fix the problem.

This is the fifth season of the series, featuring award-winning journalists, including Sam Eaton, Cody LaGrow, Amber Strong and Nelufar Hedayat. Shot in a cinematic style, each 30-minute episode “immerses viewers with strong narrative storytelling and rigorous reporting,” Scripps News says. The 10-episode season runs each Sunday through Dec. 17, 2023 (except Oct. 22).

“This is our boldest season yet with a wide variety of topics to engage our audiences,” said Zach Toombs, director of Longform for Scripps News and In Real Life executive producer. “The reporting is thorough and thoughtful. The content is relevant. We expect stories to really resonate with viewers.”
