NBC O&O WTVJ Miami has named Sara Cardona its main sports anchor and reporter. The bilingual broadcast journalist, who begins her new role on June 5, will also contribute to sports coverage on WSCV (Telemundo 51).

“Sara is a skilled and versatile sports journalist who has a passion for reporting and experience covering high-profile teams and big events,” said Dawn Clapperton, WTVJ vice president of news. “We are pleased to welcome her to our team and excited for her to begin delivering coverage of South Florida’s action-packed sports scene to our audiences.”

Cardona joins WTVJ from WTVQ Lexington, Ky., where she was a sports anchor and reporter. In this role, which she began in 2021, she covered local and national sports, including University of Kentucky athletics, which included hosting shows on Wildcats basketball and football. Most recently, she delivered sports news and storylines for the station’s live morning and early afternoon newscasts, including the station’s Good Day Kentucky program.

Prior to WTVQ, Cardona spent two years as a sports anchor and reporter at WGFL Gainesville, Fla., where she covered University of Florida sports – including football, basketball and baseball – and led a weekly Southeastern Conference football program. Cardona also served as a sideline reporter covering Conference USA football and basketball games on ESPN3 and ESPN Plus for more than two years. She began her sports media career at WZTV and WKRN, both Nashville.

Cardona was born in Medellín, Colombia, and raised in Nashville. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism from Middle Tennessee State University.
