The Weather Channel And Pattrn to Offer ‘2023 Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards’

Today, The Weather Channel television network and Pattrn, The Weather Channel’s climate, environment and sustainability brand, announced an expansive partnership with Covering Climate Now to showcase winners of the 2023 Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards to be announced during Climate Week NYC (Sept. 17-24).

The climate journalism winners will be featured all week, starting Monday, Sept. 18, on The Weather Channel’s live climate show Pattrn at noon ET.  Selected as winners from almost 1,100 entries submitted by journalists around the world, these journalists will be celebrated on-air via special packages showcasing their work, alongside live interviews.

“Extreme weather is the obvious gateway into the climate story, and no news outlet in the United States pays more or better attention to the climate connection to extreme weather than our esteemed partners at The Weather Channel,” said Mark Hertsgaard, the co-founder and executive director of Covering Climate Now. “We’re honored to partner with The Weather Channel during Climate Week NYC and beyond on climate coverage that arms the public with the power that knowledge gives.”

“It’s essential that people understand the importance of climate news and why these stories need to be shared, told, and illustrated accurately and objectively,” said Nora Zimmett, president of news and original series for The Weather Channel. “It means so much to us that we’re able to highlight the amazing work of these journalists. Our ongoing goal is to consistently further the climate conversation, make more people aware of the urgency of the crisis, and show appreciation for the everyday people doing their part to make a better planet for all of us.”

Climate Week NYC features business, political and society leaders for a mixture of climate-focused activities and experiences. Throughout the event, The Weather Channel will provide exclusive event coverage including live reporting during the network’s flagship morning show, America’s Morning Headquarters and Pattrn. Additionally, Stephanie Abrams, meteorologist at The Weather Channel and Pattrn co-host, will be reporting live from New York all week, sharing special coverage throughout each day across The Weather Channel’s live programming. Abrams has also been tapped to host Covering Climate Now’s Climate Changes Everything conference at the Columbia Journalism School, Sept. 21 and 22.
