Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts helped WAPT provide vital aid to tornado victims in Mississippi, her home state.
WAPT, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Jackson, Miss., collaborated with Alpha Media’s Alpha Cares community outreach program on April 24 to hold a relief drive supporting the residents of Rolling Fork and Silver City, Miss., who were affected by the devastating tornado outbreak on March 24.
The generous donations from the community helped the Mississippi Food Network fill four trucks with over 30 pallets of food and supplies. In addition, more than $11,000 was raised to provide further assistance to tornado survivors.
The donations were delivered to the distribution center in Rolling Fork on Wednesday, April 26, and were distributed live on Good Morning America with Robin Roberts.
“We are humbled by the outpouring of generosity from our community and our radio partners at Alpha Media,” says Peter Keith, WAPT’s general manager. “The 16 WAPT Tornado Relief Drive has exceeded all expectations, and these donations will go a long way in helping our neighbors in Rolling Fork and Silver City recover from this tragedy.”
The 16 WAPT Tornado Drive culminated with a 30-minute commercial-free documentary report on the recovery efforts in the Mississippi Delta.
The special, Mississippi Tornadoes: Rebuilding and Recovering, can now be streamed on the Very Local app (available on Roku, Amazon Fire and most Smart TVs).
