The idea is to simplify ad rotation into two settings. With the change, two options become available in September — Optimize, which prioritizes the best-performing ads; and Rotate Indefinitely, which gives ads equal preference. The Optimize setting will optimize ads for clicks in each individual auction using signals such as keyword, search term, device, and location.

Viewership Down For Video Music Awards
The MTV Video Music Awards tallied 5.68 million viewers across 10 different networks on Sunday for a show dominated by Kendrick Lamar’s coronation and the debut of Taylor Swift’s new video. That’s down from the 6.5 million people who watched the VMAs in 2016, and the 9.8 million who watched the year before. Among the broadcast networks, NBC won the week in primetime, averaging 5.5 million viewers. CBS had 4.2 million, ABC had 3.1 million, Fox had 2.4 million, Telemundo had 1.5 million, Univision had 1.4 million, Ion Television had 1.3 million and the CW had 890,000.

Hearst says it is donating $1 million to the Greater Houston Red Cross to aid in Harvey rescue and recovery efforts and will match employee donations up to an additional $1 million.The Walt Disney Co. and its Houston ABC O&O KTRK have pledged $1 million to the Red Cross for Harvey relief efforts and will also match, dollar for dollar, employee donations to the Red Cross and other organizations involved in Harvey relief.
Among this year’s honorees are the teams behind a voice-navigation system for TV content, a video-conferencing service, video ID tech and a 3D Doppler radar system. In addition, Robert Ross, SVP, CBS Engineering, and Richard Friedel, EVP, Fox Engineering, will receive Technology & Engineering Lifetime Achievement Awards on April 8 in Las Vegas.
The company will have access to audience measurement data for TV programs and commercial content in broadcast syndication and across all seven of the Entertainment Studios’ HD cable television networks.
WLS Out Front On Chicago’s Social Scene
WLS, ABC’s O&O in Chicago, is ahead in social media actions in the market over the last six months according to data from audience insight firm Shareablee. WLS has almost 25 million actions on social, 36% of the total engagement generated in the DMA (No. 3), with more than 69 million social actions. WLS was also first on Instagram with almost 950,000 actions.
After eschewing banner ads for years, BuzzFeed is finally embracing them. BuzzFeed will introduce display ads that will be bought and sold using third-party ad technology on a global basis. The move is a bid to tap into its scale and monetize its owned-and-operated platforms more effectively.
Tegna Makes Group-Wide Texas Relief Push
All money raised by Tegna’s 46 stations in 38 markets stations will be donated to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. In addition, the Tegna Foundation will match the first $100,000 of donations.
