‘ET’ Shines In The Reflected Glow Of The Oscars

In the week ending April 3, Entertainment Tonight surged 28% from the prior session to a 2.3 live-plus-same-day national rating, racking up its biggest Nielsen score in two months.

Entertainment Tonight was the big percentage winner among the red carpet contingent in the session that included the 94th Academy Awards, the frame ending April 3.

Long the gold standard among entertainment news shows, it also had the biggest annual improvement of any magazine, growing 15% from the same week last year and 56% to a magazine category best single day 2.8 for its coverage of the kudos on March 28.

Also getting big Nielsen marks among the traditional entertainment magazines for their next-day Oscar coverage were Access Hollywood, which shot up 13%, and Extra, which was the only top-five news mag to match its season high, surging 33% on the 28th and 17% week to week.

Several strips delivered in daytime. Live with Kelly and Ryan, buoyed by a 31% leap to a single-day 2.1 for its annual “After Oscars Show,” topped the talkers for a fourth straight week. Week to week and year to year, Live jumped 13% to a first-place 1.8, matching its highest rating of the season.

Dr. Phil also grew a healthy 13% for the week and rallied 21% over the prior two weeks to finish just behind Live with a 1.7.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Kelly Clarkson was another to climb 13%, joining the Top 3 party with four-week high 0.9 and outperforming its year-ago numbers by double digits.

Others lighting up the yak pack among the Big 8 were Rachael Ray, which rose 14%, and Tamron Hall, which spiked a substantial 17%.

Judge Judy continued to be the supreme court show, shooting up 7% for the week and 17% over the previous two sessions to a daytime-best 4.8, and a 4% increase over last year at this time.

Hot Bench was TV’s second-highest courtroom, strengthening 7% to a 1.5.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.7, +17% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.6, +20%)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.4, +33%), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (0.4, +33%) and Wendy Williams (0.4, +33%)
