Tight Race For Tops In Talk

Dr. Phil leapt into a tie for place first with Live with Kelly and Ryan in the session ending April 24, picking up 14% from the prior frame and forging ahead 14% from the same week last year.

The race among the top talk shows in syndication tightened in the session ending April 24 with a Michelle Obama interview triggering an Ellen ratings eruption as three of the top four highest-rated chat strips scored double digit increases.

Dr. Phil leapt into a tie for place first with Live with Kelly and Ryan, picking up 14% from the prior frame and forging ahead 14% from the same week last year to a 1.6 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Live, which had been untouchable in first place for the past six weeks, gave back 6% to a 1.6. Ellen DeGeneres, a smoking hot performer in its 19th and final season, surged 11% to an 11-week high 1.0.

Ellen, also outperformed its year-ago rating by 11%. On April 19 ratings skyrocketed 50% from the prior Tuesday to a weekly high for the guest appearance of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Kelly Clarkson joined the Nielsen growth party, plowing ahead 13% to a 0.9 and improving 13% over the last year.

Court show leader for the past 1,335 weeks, Judge Judy, jumped 7% to a  4.6 and climbed 7% from its year-ago mark.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Fellow legal heavy hitter Hot Bench boasted a 7% advance to a second-place 1.5.

In access time periods, the quiz and giveaway shows continued to be led by Jeopardy, which added 4% to a 5.6; Family Feud followed with an unchanged 5.1.

The top talk shows for the week among women 25-54 were:

  • Dr. Phil (0.6, +20% from the week before), tied with Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.6, unchanged)
