Broadcast Net Ratings Down From ’16
It’s 2017 and everyone in broadcast television is miserable. All five of the over-the-air English-language networks are down again in Nielsen’s TV ratings, though some are retaining fall 2016 numbers better than others.

This is a surprise???
Commercial glut. Promotion glut. Marginal content. What could possibly be the problem?
If you think commercial glut on TV is bad (and it is), commercial glut on RADIO is EVEN WORSE!
Circling the drain, but the too much competition is worse than perceived glut. Commercials made perfect sense when they were the sole option.
“Perceived”? The average prime time half-hour has 18-19 minutes of actual content.
That’s proven, jdshaw, by the timing of the same shows when they are released on Blu-Ray or DVD. On those formats, no commercials, the average hour long show actually runs 40 to 42 minutes.
i love how @jdshaw claims 18-19 min average and the only network show under 20 minutes he can ever name is Big Bang Theory to pay for the giant salaries. And most 30 minute Network shows on IMDb are listed as 22 minutes and 44 for 60 minute programs.
Insider – You must be living on planet Trump.
TVnewscheck sure knows how to bury the lead. this is TV Armageddon – as bad as the numbers are ( and they are Drastic) why the pussyfooting around? This is probably the greatest blow to television since it was invented and certainly deserves a better headline than the ominous, as-a-matter-of-fact article.
Titanic captain – “Everything is good. No problem.”
Yet they’re demanding more and more and more in retrans fees.
Pigs get slaughtered.
Yes, formergm, considering that CBS (broadcast) and ESPN (cable) are the big pigs at the trough.
That’s why formerGM is former. And HillBillyTV is jealous.
Nope, just concerned that as “broadcasters” force higher rates on cable customers more will jump the ship…
yes, i remember the famous line in The Graduate “Retrans”
Does this surprise anyone? Is there any reason why they would be up? Look at the quality of the network programs and add in over 12 minutes of commercials and we wonder why television ratings on the networks is down. Local stations say they deserve more dollars for retrains because they have local news that viewers want and need yet they are falling into the same trap with 12 minutes of commercials and weather hype and little to no enterprising reporting. There is major competition today and the old business plan used in broadcast of adding more commercials is not the answer.
No, Old School, your take on Local News is off – just yesterday, in my market, in the Late news we had two (2) stories with video of car accidents !!
🙂
You know why? Reboots. Dynasty, Will & Grace, MacGyver, Hawaii 5-O, I could go on. Hollywood ran out of new ideas some time ago, and, for both movies and TV, depends on prequeals, sequals, and remakes/reboots to try to make money off us. Does NOT work!
Local and Network TV is in peril and the lack of honesty from the people running these companies is exacerbating their problem..News at the Local and Network Level is on life support…A boss of mine a long time ago said if you leave this business to news people they will eat their young…its occuring!!1
Local stations might as well put up a full screen sign saying “No content here. Viewers not welcome.” Countless hours of news on the cheap – defined by crime, car wrecks, and endless weather hype. Insane commercial glut. One hot mess.
