Caroline Foy Welch Promoted To WTVD GM

The programming VP at WPVI Philadelphia is tapped to succeed John Idler as head of the Raleigh-Durham, N.C., ABC O&O.

Caroline Foy Welch, a programming executive with the ABC Owned Television Stations Group, has been promoted to president and general manager of ABC’s WTVD Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (DMA 24). She succeeds John Idler who recently was promoted to president-GM of ABC-owned WLS Chicago.

As head of WTVD, Welch now has chief management responsibility for the station as well as its LiveWell Network affiliate subchannel, the abc11.com website, and the station’s various other new media and mobile businesses.

Welch has been VP of programming at ABC-owned WPVI Philadelphia since 2004, managing all local entertainment and special-event programming ranging from local productions to syndicated fare. She also oversaw WPVI’s media relations department, liasoned with ABC Network and Programming Operations and developed numerous initiatives that expanded advertising opportunities and station partnerships in the Philadelphia market.

Earlier at WPVI, Welch was responsible for the station’s brand management as VP of creative services, from 1997 to 2004. She joined WPVI as a promotion producer in 1992.

Prior to joining the ABC Owned Television Stations Group, Welch held producing positions at WBFF Baltimore and Simmons/Fortune in Washington, D.C. Before moving into television, she worked as a print reporter on the island of Tonga, in the South Pacific.

The WPVI mafia strikes again! Congrats to Caroline. But in that group, if you have career aspirations and you haven’t worked at WPVI, you have a problem (with a few exceptions like Idler).

WPVI been a powerhouse tv station for decades in Philadelphia. They have promoted many, they should success means promotion. These promotions are for employees who been with them for decades. Congratulations Caroline well deserve. She worked with WABC7 Pres Dave Davies, group chief Rebecca Campbell, many others.

I’m not saying the WPVI grads aren’t great and don’t deserve promotions…I am saying that if you work for the ABC O&Os and you are have not spent time at WPVI, you are at a disadvantage no matter how good you are.
