CBS Debuts New Morning Show

The network debuted its CBS This Morning program today. The network's latest competitor to Today and Good Morning America is hosted by Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Erica Hill.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — CBS News is trying something new in the morning.

The network debuted its “CBS This Morning” program Monday, the latest competitor to “Today” and “Good Morning America.”

Hosts Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Erica Hill were seated at a circular glass table in a new studio constructed at CBS’ New York headquarters.

Rose presented the day’s “eye opener” at the top, a minute-long clip package of what was new in the world, from Republican debate sparring in New Hampshire to Tim Tebow’s winning touchdown pass in the NFL playoffs.

Jan Crawford reported from New Hampshire. Rose interviewed GOP contender Newt Gingrich and debriefed chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer. Scott Pelley followed up on a “60 Minutes” report from the night before.

CBS has long been third in morning ratings.

That it took so long for Black Rock to dump The Early Show demonstrates the Achille’s heel of the Tiffany Network.

Charlie Rose brings definition to the broadcast, but I have some doubt as to how long a journalist/reporter of his stature is willing to go the morning TV news grind. He has more important things to do, and I mean that as a compliment. Had CBS Brass been more thoughtful, and earlier at making the move (by years), they could have kept Harry Smith and brought in Rose on a revolving special report basis.

I want it to do well. The Today Show has become way too “entertainmentized” with quick capsolated “interviews” in which the star staff members ask “questions” that tell a Cliff’s Notes version of any story followed by the interviewee with little more to do than nod “yes” or “no”.

As for ABC’s GMA, it hasn’t been worth a damn since Charles Gibson left it to do World Tonite and that too has gone down since he retired.

Peter is correct on several points. I caught the new show right from the start, and wasn’t very impressed. Sure, a nice new set, and they’ve retained the anchors sitting around a table, which is a good thing. But Charlie Rose? Yaaaa-www-nnn!! I appreciate the concentration on news, the interviews, and don’t blame CBS for spending time with Ms. Margulies (sp?) from Good Wife. Nothing that Fox, ABC, and NBC do with their franchise prime time fare. Gayle King? Yeah, a nice addition, but a little on the soft side. IMHO, what resulted from the changes from the Wragge/Hill/Glor troika was a blend of 40% of the old show, 30% what you’d see with a TV version of NPR’s Morning Edition, and 30% of CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, although a tad less Sunday AM features, an a bit more straight news. But Mr. Rose brings nothing new that Mr. Smith didn’t already have, per Peter’s post. And what was wrong with Chris Wragge? Why not bring in, if you wanted a more ‘veteran news anchor’, someone like Bill Plante, or even Chip Reid? But CBS has already wasted Harry Smith and John Roberts in favor of the ‘bomb of the year’, Katie Couric. For CBS’ and my own sake, being one who does enjoy CBS News and their retaining NEWS as the main ingredient from 7-9AM, I hope this blend works. BTW, ditto to Peter Bright re GMA and Today. Total variety show/entertainment tabloids, with a tiny smidgen of faux-news thrown in for – why?
