CNN Loads Up On Handheld JVC Camcorders

The cable news giant has bought 177 of the GY-HM100U cameas and may buy hundreds more next year, according to the manufacturer. The camera's MPEG-2 format is compatible with the XDCAM workflow used by CNN.

JVC Professional Products said today that CNN has purchased 177 of its GY-HM100U ProHD camcorders as it goes about replacing hundreds of tape-based DV units now in use. JVC said it expects the cable news network to purchase additional cameras from it next year.

A compact, handheld 3-CCD camcorder, the GY-HM100U records HD video at 35 Mbps in the MPEG-2 format compatible with the Sony XDCAM file-based workflow used throughout CNN. The JVC camcorder records 1080i files in the MP4 format directly onto SDHC memory cards.

“The GY-HM100 ProHD camcorder is well suited for a fast-paced newsgathering organization,” said Larry Librach, JVC VP, broadcast and public sector. “Its lightweight form factor, sturdy solid-state recording and high-quality imaging make it an ideal complement to CNN’s traditional shoulder-type ENG equipment.”

Librach said the CNN order came in Monday and that JVC has already begun shipping units for deployment throughout the world starting in January.

He declined to say what the order was worth. The camcorder lists for $3,000.

Thank goodness JVC makes disposable gear! Since they have the worlds worst tech support, that’s about your only option.
