WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Couple Of Courts Are Syndie’s Bright Spots

Judy Sheindlin’s duo of Judge Judy and Hot Bench posted the few gains to be found in the week ending May 3. Just about everything else in first-run was flat or down from the previous session. There were some gainers from the same week last year, however, including Wendy Williams, Live with Kelly & Michael, Jerry Springer and Family Feud.

Hot Bench was the hot show in syndication in the session ending May 3, the first full week of the May sweep. Bench was the only syndie strip to hit a new season high, surging 11% to an all-time best 2.0 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

Meanwhile, almost every other strip was down or flat due to plunging PUT levels amid warmer spring weather.

The only court room finishing ahead of Bench was its sister show Judge Judy, which grew 1% to a 6.8 and outperformed everything in syndication overall.

Judge Judy Sheindlin created Bench, which is the season’s biggest new show in first run, according to Nielsen’s household ratings.

Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy dropped into a second-place tie among the first-run strips overall behind Judy. Wheel skidded 7% to a 6.3, while Jeopardy fell 6% to a 6.3.

Among talk shows, Dr. Phil was tops for the 16th consecutive week (including ties) and the 31st time in the past 35 weeks, despite a 3% dip to a 3.3. Phil was also first among women 25-54 with a 1.6 in the key demo.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Live with Kelly & Michael also eased 3% and was a good second at a 2.9 household rating while improving 7% from last year at this time.

Ellen declined 8% to a third-place 2.4, while slipping 14% from the same week a year ago.

The only talkers moving up from last year in addition to Live were Wendy Williams, which jumped 21% to a 1.7, and Jerry Springer, which rose 8% to a 1.3.

Dr. Oz, who has been under attack by other physicians, saw his show’s ratings go down the most of any talker, tumbling 39% from last year to a 1.4.

In access, shows had a rough week with all of the magazines and games losing ground or, at best, drifting sideways.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.6, -6% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.5, unchanged)
  • Maury (1.4, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (1.3, +8%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, -14%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
