WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Few Gainers In Lazy, Hazy Summer Session

First-run shows posting week-to-week gains include talker Maury, three court shows, three games and no magazines.

Maury was the only talker to advance during the summer doldrums session ending July 12, overtaking Ellen DeGeneres for the first time this season and snagging sole possession of third place in the closely watched talk show category.

Hosted by 76-year-old Maury Povich, the strip, which is wrapping up its 23rd  season, was the only show in the genre on the upswing, growing 6% to a 1.9 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

In addition, Povich, the oldest talk show host in syndication, was the clear No. 1 among women 18-34 and women 18-49 as well as tied for No. 1 among women 25-54 with Live with Kelly & Michael. Kelly & Michael was the unchallenged among households for the second straight week, clocking a 2.6, which was a 4% decline from the previous frame.

Besides Kelly & Michael, the only other talk show finishing ahead of Maury was Dr. Phil, which dipped 4% to a new season low 2.3 due to a full week of reruns.

Ellen remained at its season-low 1.8, dropping to fourth place with repeats.

Court show phenom Judge Judy featured reruns on four of the five days but still rose 3% to a 6.6. That made Judy the highest rated show in households on the overall syndication chart for the ninth time in the past 11 weeks.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Judy’s Hot Bench improved 5% to a 2.0 despite airing encore episodes all week and was the No. 2 courtroom for the 14th consecutive session.

In access, Family Feud easily blew away the game shows, winning the category for the fifth week in a row. Feud was up 5% week to week and 41% year to year.

In second place, Jeopardy inched up 2% to a 6.1, while longtime leader Wheel of Fortune was the No. 3 game for the third straight week despite a 3% recovery to a 6.0.

In the metered markets, the Boris & Nicole test dropped 13% to a 0.7 rating/2 share in the second week of its four-week trial. After two weeks, the show averaged a 0.7/2, down 36% from its lead-ins and 13% below its year-ago July time periods. Among women 25-54, the test lost 25% to a 0.6/4 in week two.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Maury (1.3, +8% from the previous week), tied with Live with Kelly & Michael (1.3, unchanged)
  • Dr. Phil (1.2, +9%), tied with Wendy Williams (1.2, -8%)
  • Steve Wilkos (1.0, unchanged), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (1.0, unchanged)
  • Jerry Springer (0.9, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
