Godsey To Retire As GM of KMBC-KCWE

The head of Hearst’s ABC-CW duopoly in Kansas City, Wayne Godsey, will retire later this year after more than 40 years in local television.

Wayne Godsey, president-GM since 1999 of Hearst Television’s KMBC (ABC) and KCWE (CW) Kansas City, Mo. (DMA 31), will retire later this year, capping a more than four-decade local television career.  His successor will be announced at a future date.

“Wayne was a longtime colleague when he took the reins at KMBC in 1999,” said Hearst Television President-CEO David J. Barrett. “His stewardship at KMBC, one of Hearst’s earliest and most honored stations, even further solidified Wayne’s reputation as a top broadcaster. KMBC’s longstanding tradition of strong news leadership and dedicated community service remain a model for television stations throughout the Midwest.”

Before moving to KMBC, Godsey was executive VP and a member of the board of directors of Pulitzer Broadcasting Co., which was acquired by Hearst Television in 1999. The KMBC appointment marked a return to Hearst for Godsey, who had previously worked as VP-GM of Hearst’s WISN Milwaukee, before joining KOAT Albuquerque, N.M., then owned by Pulitzer, also as VP-GM. Before his time at WISN, he held positions in television journalism and in management in various markets.

Godsey has served on the board of directors of the Television Bureau of Advertising and as national president of the Radio-Television News Directors’ Association. He earned a BA in English from Lynchburg College, Virginia.
