‘Judge Judy’ Making The Most Of Summer

An 18% week-to-week surge puts the court show at the top of the syndication rankings in the week ending June 28. Among the talkers, Maury, Steve Wilkos and Jerry Springer grow, while Family Feud picks up 5% to lead the game shows.

The first week of summer was a hot one for Judge Judy. The queen of the courts vaulted over every other syndicated show in the session ending June 28 with an 18% surge to a 6.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, its strongest performance in six weeks.

Elsewhere in daytime, reruns of Dr. Phil tied Live with Kelly & Michael at the top of the talk show rankings for the third straight week. Both strips dipped 4% to a 2.6, but each grew 4% from last year at this time. Among women 25-54, Live led with a 1.4 demo rating.

Maury moved up, jumping into third place for the first time this season with a 6% spike to a 1.9. This tied Ellen DeGeneres, which fell 5% to a new season low 1.9.

In the key women 25-54 demo however, Maury was up 8% to a 1.3, while Ellen was flat at a 1.1, dropping behind Wendy Williams, which clocked a 1.2.

The talkers with the sharpest gains were Steve Wilkos and Jerry Springer, which each improved 8% to a 1.4. In addition, Springer rose 17% from last year, the most of any talker.

Wendy Williams had the second biggest annual growth, gaining 14%.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In access, Entertainment Tonight led the magazines with a 3% advance to a five-week-high 3.1. Inside Edition was off 3% to a second-place 2.9 after being tied with ET in the previous frame.

Family Feud, which has finished in first place among game shows for the prior two sessions, made it three in a row with a 5% rally to a 6.2. Year-to-year, Feud was up 27%, by far the most of any show in the category.

Jeopardy inched up 3% to a second-place 6.1, while Wheel of Fortune slipped to third despite a 2% uptick to a 6.0 after a new season-low the week before.

Meanwhile, in the metered markets, the Boris & Nicole test run declined 11%, from a 0.9 rating/3 share to a 0.8/2 on day 2 of its three week trial. The key women 25-54 demo dropped 25% on day 2 from a 0.8/5 to a 0.6/4.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.4, unchanged from the week before)
  • Maury (1.3, +8%), tied with Dr. Phil (1.3, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (1.2, -8%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.1, unchanged)
  • Jerry Springer (0.9 +13%), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.9, unchanged)
  • Steve Harvey (0.8, unchanged)
