WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

‘Kelly’ Stays On Top Of The Talkers

The Ripa-helmed strip is No. 1 in the genre in both households and women 25-54. Ellen and The Doctors were the only other chat shows to post week-to-week gains in the week ending June 19, a session that saw many syndicated shows preempted for coverage of the Orlando tragedy.

Extended news coverage of the Orlando nightclub shooting partially or completely preempted numerous shows in the session ending June 19, causing many to decline.

On the positive side, Live with Kelly was the No. 1 talk show for a third straight week for the first time since August of 2015, holding steady at a 2.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating. Kelly also took the top spot in talk among women 25-54, moving up 8% to a 1.3 in the key demo.

Usual talk leader Dr. Phil dipped 4% to a 2.5 in households with an all-repeat week, while Ellen DeGeneres recovered 16% to a 2.2 after dropping to new season lows in the prior two frames.

The Doctors was the only other talker in positive territory, strengthening 13% to a 0.9.

Elsewhere, rising courtroom star Hot Bench had the most annual growth of any strip in syndication, surging 20% from last year. In addition, Bench was up 4% to a 2.4 and ranked as the fourth-highest-rated strip overall in daytime for the seventh straight week.

In access, Entertainment Tonight led the magazines for the 29th week in a row with a steady 2.9. Inside Edition was flat at a 2.7, however the recently renewed TMZ slipped 7% to a 1.4, its lowest rating in nearly five years. Meanwhile, Extra was the only mag to defy a category-wide year-to-year downtrend, holding firm at a 1.3.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Family Feud fell 3% to a 6.6, but still crushed the game shows for the eighth week in a row and remained in the overall lead.

Wheel of Fortune, the No. 2 game, skidded 5% to a new season low 5.5. Compared to last year, Feud improved 12%, while Wheel lost 7%.

In the metered markets, with three weeks of a four-week test completed, The Jason Show averaged 0.5 rating/2 share on four Fox stations, dropping 29% from its average lead-in and sinking 38% from its year-ago time period average.

Also finding the going rough was the four-week tryout for Top 30, which, after three weeks, fell 38% from its lead-in and tumbled 29% from its year-ago time periods to a 0.5/2 average on 18 select Fox, Media General and Sinclair stations.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly (1.3, +8% from the week before)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, +20%)
  • Dr. Phil (1.1, -8%)
  • Maury (0.9, -10%), tied with Wendy Williams (0.9, -10%)
