KSBW Monterey Supports Red Cross Relief Efforts

Typhoon Haiyan swept across the Philippines last Friday leaving a trail of massive destruction. It was the second category 5 typhoon to strike the Philippines this year.

Starting Wednesday, Hearst-owned KSBW Monterey-Salinas, Calif. (DMA 125) will launch “Help after Haiyan” combining both special on-air messages from its news team urging viewers to support the Red Cross’ efforts for Typhoon Haiyan disaster relief along with in-depth news coverage. Viewers will be urged to support the Red Cross by calling 1-800-733-7575 or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

“We have a very large Filipino community here on the Central Coast, which is rooted in on our connectedness in World War II and the former Fort Ord,” said Joseph W. Heston, KSBW president-GM.  “When we were in dire need, the men of the Philippines bravely fought shoulder-to-shoulder with our U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater against the Japanese.  Now it is our turn to stand with the citizens of the Philippines in their great hour of need.”
