Many Syndies Flat In Last Week Of Season

The week ending Sept. 6 saw most entries in reruns and on hold in the various genres. The overall top show, Judge Judy, did pick up 9% from the previous frame.

Newcomers to syndication held on to their relative ranks on their second day, while established programs prepared for their upcoming season in the session ending Sept. 6.

New talker FABLife, which opened on Monday, Sept. 14, along with Crime Watch Daily and Crazy Talk, led the rookies with a 1.0 rating/3 share metered market average after two days, finishing first or second in its time period in five of its top eight markets.

Real-life true crime strip Crime Watch Daily averaged a 0.8/2 metered market average for its primary runs after two days, Among the top 10 markets, the show saw day-to-day gains of 100% in Boston, 25% in Washington and 167% in Atlanta. Among women 25-54, its overall average jumped 25% on its second outing, to a 0.5/3.

Crazy Talk held steady at a 0.3/1 metered market average on its second day, but in the top 10 markets saw its ratings double in Chicago, triple in Washington and more than quadruple in Houston.

Among the closely watched veteran talkers premiering this week, Dr. Phil debuted its 14th season on Monday, Sept. 14, with a 3.0/8 metered market average for its primary runs, jumping 76% from its lead-in and 11% from last September. Phil won its time periods in both New York and Los Angeles with annual increases of 41% in New York and 27 in L.A.

Another popular medical professional, Dr. Oz, began operating in his seventh season with a healthy 1.3/4 metered market average, including year-to-year growth of 77% in L.A., where it tied General Hospital for first place among English-language shows. Oz also surged 160% from its lead-in in Los Angeles.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Meanwhile, the national ratings released today covered the session ending Sept. 6, a week marked by reruns for most shows. The top-rated program overall by far was Judge Judy, which jumped 9% to a 7.0 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, its highest number in 26 weeks. This also marked the 11th week in a row that Judy has been the overall No. 1 in syndication.

In talk, mainly repeats of both Live with Kelly & Michael and Dr. Phil finished in a first-place tie at a 2.5 for the second straight week.

Among magazines, Inside Edition led with a flat 2.9. Entertainment Tonight slipped 7% to a second-place 2.8 thanks to primary run preemptions for preseason football in the biggest markets.

Nationally, the week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Maury (1.3, +8% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (1.2, unchanged)
  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.1, -8%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.0, +11%), tied with Steve Wilkos (1.0, +25%)
  • Jerry Springer (0.9, +13%)
