No Summer Doldrums In Judy’s Court

Even in repeats Judge Judy gains 1% from the week before and holds onto syndication’s crown as well as the No. 1 court show spot. News mags get a ratings boost from coverage of Amy Winehouse’s death. Live with Regis and Kelly and Maury stay Nos. 1 and 2 in the talkers.

Ratings for Judge Judy (CTD) continued to rise in the week ending July 31 as syndication’s No. 1 show flirted with its best levels of the season despite being in repeats all week.

Court Shows

Judy widened its lead over all rivals with a 6.9, its second-highest performance of the season, improving 1% from the week before and 64% from last year at this time in households. In addition, the show jumped 10% in the women 25-54 demo to a 3.2.

Among the other courtrooms, Judge Joe Brown (CTD) held steady at a 2.8; People’s Court (WBDTD) was flat at a 2.0; Judge Mathis (WBDTD) slipped 6% to a 1.6; and Divorce Court (Twentieth) lost 7% to a 1.4, tying Judge Alex (Twentieth), which was unchanged.

Magazine Shows

Several magazines saw Nielsen spikes with coverage of the death of 27-year-old singer Amy Winehouse. News mag leader Entertainment Tonight (CTD) grew 3% to a 3.5, while Access Hollywood (NBCU) jumped 6% to a 1.8 and The Insider (CTD) advanced 7% to a 1.5.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

On Monday, July 25, the Winehouse story sent ET up 18% to a 4.0; Access Hollywood surged 12% to a 1.9; and The Insider spurted 29% to a 1.8. Meanwhile TMZ (WBDTD) and Extra (WBDTD) held firm at 1.9 and 1.5, respectively; Inside Edition (CTD) was the only show to decline, fading 10% to a 1.7.

Game Shows

Elsewhere in access, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) led the game shows with an unchanged 6.3. Jeopardy (CTD) was flat at a 5.4; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) fell 4% to a 2.6; Who Wants to be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) remained at a 2.4; while Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Twentieth) dropped 9% to a 1.0.

Talk Shows

In daytime, Live with Regis and Kelly (Disney-ABC) made it two weeks in a row at the top of the summer talk show race, holding steady at a 2.5. Maury (NBCU) remained second with a flat 2.4; Dr. Phil (CTD) dipped 4% to a 2.2; Dr. Oz (Sony) was unchanged at a 2.0; while Oprah (CTD) sank 14% to a new all-time low 1.9.

First-Run Freshmen

Swift Justice with Nancy Grace (CTD) was the rookie champion for the 46th consecutive week, despite giving back 12% to a 1.5. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Twentieth) declined 20% to a 0.8; Nate Berkus (Sony) eroded 11% to a 0.8; while Judge Karen’s Court (Litton) and America’s Court with Judge Ross (Entertainment Studios) were flat at 0.7 and 0.4, respectively.

Father Albert (Debmar-Mercury), a new talk show that is having a five-week summer test run, averaged a 0.7 rating/2 share in the metered markets for its first four weeks. This was down 30% from its lead-in average, although even with its year-ago time periods.

Dish Nation (Twentieth), an entertainment news program, which is getting a six-week tryout, posted a 0.9/2 metered market average for its first two weeks. This was down 36% from its lead-in and 31 from its year-ago time period average.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Off-net sitcoms were little changed. Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) weakened 2% from the week before to a 6.0. Family Guy (Twentieth) inched up 2% to a 4.4; My Wife and Kids (Disney-ABC) eased 3% to a 3.1; George Lopez Show (WBDTD) sank 4% to a 2.6; Everybody Loves Raymond (CTD) and Seinfeld (Sony) were each down 4% to a 2.5.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBCU) opened up a big lead on the off-net weekly hours, soaring 16% to a 4.3. Second-place Criminal Minds (CTD) softened 13% to a 2.8; Without a Trace (WBDTD) and The Closer (WBDTD) were unchanged at 2.8 and 2.5, respectively; while Monk (NBCU) added 9% to a 2.5.
