The ABC News correspondent will be honored for his contributions to journalism and freedom of the press in a ceremony on Sept. 19 at the RTDNA's Excellence in Journalism 2015 convention in Orlando, Fla.
Pierre Thomas Wins RTDNA Hogan Award
The Radio Television Digital News Association today named ABC News Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas the winner of the 2015 John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award.
The honor recognizes an individual’s contributions to the journalism profession and freedom of the press. “Pierre Thomas epitomizes today’s network correspondent, reporting on the biggest stories of our time,” said Mike Cavender, RTDNA executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to honor his hard work and dedication.”
“He is a tenacious reporter and superb storyteller,” added Amy Tardif, chair of RTDNA. “Viewers know he will dig for the truth and hold the powerful accountable.”
The award will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. at the group’s Excellence in Journalism 2015 convention at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Fla. The ceremony will be followed by a reception.
Pierre Thomas is the senior justice correspondent for ABC News. He joined the network in November 2000 and reports for World News Tonight with David Muir, Good Morning America, Nightline and other ABC News programs.
Thomas was a key member of ABC’s team of correspondents covering the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, which earned the network Peabody, duPont-Columbia and Emmy awards. Thomas also participated in a World News Tonight with Peter Jennings broadcast which won the Edward R. Murrow Award for best newscast in 2005, and was a key part of the ABC News team honored with two additional Murrow Awards in 2012 for the network’s coverage of the tragic Tucson shooting and the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and in 2014 for ABC’s coverage that included the Boston marathon terrorist attacks.

He received an Emmy Award as part of team coverage of the inauguration of President Barack Obama and, in 2011, the Houston Association of Black Journalists honored him with its Pinnacle Award. He was recently featured in the American Journalism Review, and in 2011 was the focus of an hour-long C-SPAN broadcast about his career and thoughts on journalism. In 2012 Thomas was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.
A former Washington Post reporter, he is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Thomas currently chairs the steering committee for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
