Post-Thanksgiving No Turkey For ‘Dr. Phil’

The talker takes over first place in the genre in the week ending Dec. 4. Other shows doing well include Anderson, Big Bang Theory and most of the magazines and game shows.

Dr. Phil (CTD), with a 3.0 rating, regained the top spot among talk shows in the first week following the November sweep, despite dipping 9% from the final week of the survey period.

In the week ending Dec. 4, Phil was No. 1 for the 9th time in 12 weeks this season and was up 11% from last year at this time. Live with Kelly (Disney-ABC), featuring How I Met Your Mother star Neal Patrick Harris as co-host, dropped 18% from the week before to a second-place 2.8. That was the week when Jerry Seinfeld co-hosted the show. Live was also down 33% from two weeks earlier, which was the final frame for co-host Regis Philbin.

Dr. Oz (Sony) sank 7% to a third-place 2.7; Ellen DeGeneres (WBDTD) lost 4% to a 2.5; and Maury (NBCU) was flat at a 2.3.

Freshman Shows

Anderson (WBDTD) easily topped all first-run newcomers for the 12th consecutive week, growing 8% to a 1.4 in households and 20% in the women 18-49 demo. Jeremy Kyle (Debmar-Mercury) was unchanged at a 0.6; while We the People with Gloria Allred (Entertainment Studios) declined 17% to a 0.5.

Excused (CTD), the new latenight dating show, slipped 14% from the prior week to a 0.6.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Freshman off-net sitcom Big Bang Theory (WBDTD) was up 9% from the week before to a 6.2. 30 Rock (NBCU), which airs in mostly lower rated late-fringe time periods, jumped 15% to a new season high 1.5; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Twentieth) fell 8% to a 1.2; and Till Death (Sony) was flat at a 0.7.

Court Shows

Judge Judy (CTD) clocked a 7.2 to lead the court shows by a wide margin, despite easing 3% from the previous week. Judge Joe Brown (CTD) held steady at a 2.8; People’s Court (WBDTD) was unchanged at a 2.1; Judge Alex (Twentieth) remained at a 1.7; while Judge Mathis (WBDTD) was down 6% to a 1.6.

Magazine Shows

Access Hollywood (NBCU) had the biggest increase among magazines, spiking 11% to a 2.0 after seeing a 28% surge to a 2.3 on Monday, Nov. 28, with breaking news of 42-year-old Jennifer Lopez and her 24-year-old new boyfriend Casper Smart.

Leader Entertainment Tonight (CTD) improved 3% to a 3.9; Inside Edition (CTD) was unchanged at a 3.3; TMZ (WBDTD) tacked on 5% to a 2.0; The Insider (CTD) was off 6% to a 1.6; while Extra (WBDTD) climbed 7% to a 1.6 in households and 22% among women 25-54, tying The Insider in households.

Game Shows

Ratings for most game shows were depressed in the prior session by Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but recovered nicely. The Insider rebounded 19% to a 7.6; Jeopardy (CTD) bounced back 22% to a 6.2; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) spurted 19% to a 3.1; and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) was flat at a 2.5.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) added 10% to a 6.5 and led the veteran off-net sitcoms. Family Guy (Twentieth) grew 11% to a 4.2; How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) shot up 24% to a 3.6; Seinfeld (Sony) was unchanged at a 2.6; Friends (WBDTD) rose 9% to a new season high 2.5, tying Everybody Loves Raymond (CTD), which advanced 14% to a 2.5.

Weekly Off-Net Hours

Among the off-net weekly hours, Law & Order (NBCU) steamed into the lead with a 14% increase to a 3.3. Criminal Minds (CTD), which was in front for the past two weeks, settled for a stable 3.0 in second place. Cold Case (WBDTD) soared 29% to a 2.7 and tied Monk (NBCU), which was up 4% to a new season high 2.7, while Without a Trace (WBDTD) remained at a 2.6.
