Raycom Media Buys 130+ JVC ENG Cams

The group broadcaster is equipping 52 stations in 36 markets with the IP-capable cameras. The buy follows the station group’s earlier purchase of JVC cameras for studio use.

Raycom Media has purchased more than 130 JVC GY-HM650 ProHd mobile news cameras in an effort to standardize the station group’s ENG operations.

The new cameras began arriving this month across the 36 markets — 52 stations — that Raycom owns or provides services for. The purchase of JVC’s ENG cameras follows the station group’s earlier purchase of JVC cameras for studio use.

Dave Folsom, Raycom vice president and chief technical officer, said the GY-HM650’s IP-capabilities was the main selling point. “Between the built-in live streaming and FTP file transfer capabilities, we can’t wait to get these cameras in the field.”

Folsom added that Raycom intends to replace its aging fleet of ENG cameras in the next few years, including heavier shoulder-mount models. “JVC’s new ProHD cameras are much lighter, they have great performance, and have far more features. We tested the camera In a couple of locations, and our shooters loved the images and the sensitivity. Plus, SD cards are more ubiquitous, easier to use and cheaper than proprietary systems.”

The GY-HM650 features three, 12-bit CMOS sensors and a built-in Fujinon wide angle 23x zoom lens with auto-focus, optical image stabilizer and manual controls. When equipped with a Verizon 4G LTE modem connected to the back of the camera via USB, the camera’s dual codec technology allows shooters to stream live HD video transmissions.

Last week, JVC updated its GY-HM650, allowing shooters stream live video in the background while recording footage to multiple file formats. The GY-HM650 2.0 will be unveiled and demoed at this year’s NAB Show.
