Wal-Mart and other discounters suffered disappointing September results, but for teen speciality and high-end stores, sales were relatively strong, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

Chillier-than-average weather sent consumers looking for new clothes and pushing same-store sales up an average of 3.8% in September, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal. Excluding Wal-Mart, however, sales were up 6%. The discount giant turned in sales of 1.3% for the month.

Analysts believe the back-to-school shopping, accelerated by cooler weather, may have robbed retailers of some sales they would have gotten in October.

Dollar General posted sales of 0.5% for the month, while Family Dollar rang up a 2.2% gain. Costco achieved a 3% increase.
