Summer’s End Spells Dip In Syndie Viewing

While viewers were getting in final rounds of vacations, ratings were also zapped by Irene-fueled power outages. Rachael Ray, Ellen, Peoples Court and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are among the few shows to post gains in the week ending Sept. 4.

In syndication’s national ratings, PUT levels plunged in the week ending Sept. 4 as the summer unofficially came to an end with the Labor Day weekend and many viewers went on vacation. Ratings for syndicated show were also severely affected by power outages along the East coast due to Hurricane Irene.

Talk Shows

In a session where very few first-run strips were able to advance, Rachael Ray (CTD) had the largest increase among talk shows, growing 8% from the week before to a 1.3. Ellen DeGeneres (WBDTD) was the only other talker to improve, adding 7% to a 1.5.

Maury (NBCU) paced the talkers with a flat 2.2. Right behind, Dr. Phil (CTD) dipped 5% to a 2.1; Live with Regis and Kelly (Disney-ABC) was unchanged at a 2.1; Dr. Oz (Sony) was flat at a 1.9; while Oprah (CTD) was down 5% to a new all-time low 1.8.

Court Shows

Judge Judy (CTD) continued to be highest-rated court show and the overall No. 1 program in syndication despite easing 2% from the week before to a 6.0. Among the other courtrooms, Judge Joe Brown (CTD) held steady at a 2.5; and People’s Court (WBDTD) was up 6% to a third-place 1.8.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Game Shows

In access time periods, Wheel of Fortune (CTD) ruled the games but dropped 3% from the week before to a 5.9. Jeopardy (CTD) sank 6% to a 4.8; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) rose 8% to a 2.6; Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) advanced 9% to a 2.4; and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Twentieth) was unchanged at a 0.9.

Magazine Shows

Nothing in the magazine category was up from the prior frame, which was boosted by coverage of the big Kim Kardashian wedding. Leader Entertainment Tonight (CTD) was off 6% to a 3.3; Inside Edition (CTD) eroded 7% to a 2.7; TMZ (WBDTD) faded 6% to a 1.7, landing in a tie with Access Hollywood (NBCU), which was steady at a 1.7; The Insider (CTD) finished 7% lower at a 1.4; while Extra (WBDTD), which was preempted 14 times, including twice in New York, relinquished 19% to a 1.3.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) led the off-net sitcoms, although it remained at a 5.9. Family Guy (Twentieth) slid 5% to a 4.1; My Wife and Kids (Disney-ABC) stumbled 20% to 3.2; and How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) picked up 4% to a 2.9.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Criminal Minds (CTD) and Without a Trace (WBDTD) took over the lead among off-net weekly hours. Minds lost 11% to a 2.5, while Trace declined 7% to a 2.5. Monk (NBCU) fell 11% to a 2.4; and previous leader Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBCU) tumbled 29% to a 2.2.
