WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Talk Shows Show Some Pop In Mid-August

Five in the genre post week-to-week gains in the week ending Aug. 16 in spite of lower PUT levels. A handful of shows in the other categories also register plus signs.

Talk shows were the strongest genre in the late summer week ending Aug. 16 even though many potential viewers opted for outdoor activities, which resulted in paltry PUT levels.

At the top of the talk parade, summer standout Live with Kelly & Michael finished first for the fourth week in a row with a 2.6 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating. In addition, Kelly & Michael led the category among women 25-54 with a 1.3.

Right behind, Dr. Phil reruns rose 4% to a second-place 2.5 household rating. Maury held steady at a third-place 1.8 and grew 6% from last year, while Ellen DeGeneres recovered 13% from a three-year low to a 1.7.

Other talkers moving up included:

  • Steve Wilkos, which strengthened 6% both week to week and year to year.
  • Meredith Vieira, which improved 13% in households to a 0.9 and jumped 25% among women 25-54.
  • The Real, which rebounded 13% to a 0.9 household  rating.

Compared to last year at this time, Wendy Williams scored the best year-to-year improvement in the category, surging 20% to a 1.2. Jerry Springer had the second-biggest growth spurt, shooting up 18% from last season to a 1.3.

The No. 1 syndicated show overall for the eighth consecutive week was Judge Judy, which gained 3% to a 6.7 despite being in repeats on all five days.
