WISH Expanding News Throughout The Day

Beginning Jan. 1, 2015, the new independent will add 20 hours per week of local news.

Les Vann, president and general manager of LIN’s WISH Indianapolis today announced significant investments in the expansion of the station’s local news programming beginning Jan. 1, 2015, when the station loses its CBS affiliation.

Daybreak will expand by two-hours, airing from 4:30 to 9 a.m.  News 8 at Noon will expand by 30 minutes to 1 p.m. The early evening newscast will expand by 30 minutes to 7 p.m. and WISH-TV’s late newscast will expand one additional hour, from 10 to 11:30 p.m.

“The investments we are making further enhance WISH-TV’s 60-year commitment to localism and local news,” said Vann. “The additional 20 hours of news per week will allow us to deliver more breaking news, investigative journalism, sports and weather coverage, across all screens, and in new time periods for our viewers.”

In April 2014, the Radio Television Digital News Association awarded WISH its top regional honor, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. This was the second year in a row WISH received this top award among all other Midwest news operations, including stations in Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis.

WISH has also been honored recently as having the Best Newscast (Society of Professional Journalists), Best Website (Indiana AP) and Best Investigative Coverage (SPJ and AP).

“Today’s announcement and these news expansions mark a new era for WISH-TV and the viewers we serve,” said Vann.  “However, this is only the beginning of that era. We’re looking forward to announcing, in the days to come, our new entertainment program lineup that complements these news expansions.”

They will do great, WJXT in Jacksonville lost their CBS affiliation over 10 years ago and hasn’t skipped a beat.

I was going to say the same thing using the same example. WKMG in Orlando is a sister to WJXT, so when WJXT lost CBS, I was afraid that WKMG would lose CBS as well. That did not happen and WKMG is still with CBS.

I’d love to know the “genius” who branded their News in that fashion. Another reason why they do so badly in the ratings.
