WSAZ’s ‘Mr. Cartoon’ Jule Guffman Dies At 91

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A man who entertained children as “Mr. Cartoon” on WSAZ-TV has died. Jule Huffman was 91.

WSAZ-TV announced Huffman’s death on its website Thursday.

Huffman took over the role in 1969 when the original Mr. Cartoon, George Lewis, left WSAZ to take a job in Maryland.

Huffman retired in 1995. He also was a longtime weather forecaster at the station.

Huffman was among the last of an old school of children’s television teachers. Mr. Cartoon and his canine sidekick Beeper told riddles and teased children in the corners of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.

Between cartoons and games, he taught children about responsibility and respect. He encouraged morals and manners, and ended every show by telling his “Cartooners” to attend the church or synagogue of their choice.
