KSBY Thinks Big With Latest DDG Set Design

Cordillera Communications’ NBC affiliate KSBY Santa Barbara, Calif. (DMA 123), and Devlin Design Group collaborated on a project for a station with limited space but lofty aspirations.

The result, a modular, technologically advanced, scenic storytelling environment created by maximizing the space and scale of the design elements.

“The new set gives us tremendous flexibility, allowing us to advance our story telling capabilities while delivering a big market presentation. It is more than we could have imagined,” said Kathleen Choal, KSBY president-general manager.

A 6×1 monitor array anchors the design and features everything from the big story to weather. An 80-inch monitor kiosk is used for interactive storytelling. Social media coverage comes alive in the ‘tech center’ with two large displays along with three smaller monitors. The front of the anchor desk includes a monitor to showcase station branding.

The textures on the set are designed to reflect the beauty of the California coast. Stacked stones and a soft wave pattern appear throughout the design. RGB LED color changing walls add visual interest and flexibility to the set.

The new set is a night & day improvement over their old set which was overdue for the dumpster. The basic problem is the lighting which now tends to be harsh and camera shading which, because of the blue-lit background, is skewing blue on the skin tones.
