LX News’ ‘My New Favorite Olympian’ Podcast Wins 2 Signal Awards

LX News’ multiplatform podcast My New Favorite Olympian earned gold in two categories of the inaugural Signal Awards, presented by the organizers of the Webby Awards. The series’ seven-part second season covering the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics won top honors for “Sports Limited Series” and “LGBTQ+ Episode,” the latter for highlighting Timothy LeDuc, a figure skater who became the first publicly out non-binary Winter Olympian in Beijing.

Season 2 of My New Favorite Olympian was hosted by LX News storyteller Ngozi Ekeledo and speedskating legend Apolo Anton Ohno. Each episode — released weekly from December 2021 to February 2022 — profiled emerging and established Team USA stars who overcame adversity, broke barriers and committed to helping others on their way to pursuing Olympic glory in Beijing.

LX News, NBCUniversal Local’s TV and streaming network, launched My New Favorite Olympian in June 2021 with a five-part debut season hosted by Ekeledo and fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad leading up to Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. The series was named “Best Podcast Series” at the 2022 Cynopsis Sports Media Awards and was a finalist for the 2022 Sports Podcast Awards (Best Olympic Podcast) and 2022 Online Journalism Awards (Olympics and Paralympics Coverage.)

A third season of the series, entitled My New Favorite Futbolista, was presented by LX News and Telemundo-owned stations leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar last November. The eight-part bilingual series, hosted by LX News’ Eric Alvarez and soccer legend Juan Pablo Ángel, showcased international soccer stars and the causes and issues they support.
