Dan Joerres Named Pres.-GM Of WBAL

Hearst Television taps the general sales manager of its WXII Winston-Salem/Greensboro, N.C., to succeed Jordan Wertlieb as head of its Baltimore NBC affiliate.

Dan Joerres, general sales manager of WXII, Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate in Winston-Salem/Greensboro, N.C., has been appointed president and general  manager of WBAL, the company’s NBC affiliate in Baltimore (DMA 27).

He succeeds Jordan Wertlieb, who has held that position since 2005 and yesterday was promoted to executive vice president of Hearst Television based at the company’s New York headquarters.

“Dan is a talented television executive, well prepared to step into this important role at WBAL-TV,” said David J. Barrett, president-CEO of Hearst Television. “He has been a standout performer at our stations in Winston-Salem (WXII-TV) and Milwaukee (WISN-TV), demonstrating excellent leadership and business skills, and a keen insight into what it takes for local TV stations to succeed in a highly competitive media environment. Joerres has been general sales manager at WXII since joining the station in 2008. Before WXII, he spent 10 years at WISN, the Hearst ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, initially as an account executive and rising to new business sales manager, national sales manager and ultimately local sales manager.

Joerres began his broadcasting career at Saga Communications, where he organized and conducted promotional events for five Milwaukee area radio stations,  later moving to Capstar Broadcasting (since acquired by Clear Channel Radio) where he sold advertising for six radio stations in the Madison, Wis., area.

Joerres holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota. Joerres received an early grounding in broadcasting from his father, who recently retired after a highly successful 30-year radio career in Milwaukee.
