PTC Launches ‘#NoIndecencyFCC’ Week

The watchdog group’s president, Tim Winter: “We are focusing on #NoIndecencyFCC to let the FCC know that we consider its proposal to limit broadcast indecency complaints extremely troublesome,” said PTC President Tim Winter. “Only pursuing so-called ‘egregious’ complaints from the public about indecent TV or radio content will lead to broadcasters pushing the decency limits even further — including the airing of nudity or harsh profanity when millions of children are in the audience,” he said.

The Parents Television Council on Monday launched “#NoIndecencyFCC” Week, May 6-10, to encourage the public to file public comments to the FCC’s proposal to limit broadcast indecency complaints. It wants people to take to Twitter using the #NoIndecencyFCC hashtag (@FCC; @ThePTC) to let the commission know that they think the proposal to limit indecency complaints should be eliminated.

“We are focusing on #NoIndecencyFCC to let the FCC know that we consider its proposal to limit broadcast indecency complaints extremely troublesome,” said PTC President Tim Winter. “Only pursuing so-called ‘egregious’ complaints from the public about indecent TV or radio content will lead to broadcasters pushing the decency limits even further — including the airing of nudity or harsh profanity when millions of children are in the audience,” he said.

“Federal law limits the broadcast of indecent material to the times of day when kids are much less likely to be in the audience, making no distinction for ‘egregious’ instances,” Winter continued. “Either material is legally indecent or it is not, and the ‘egregious’ nature of violating the law should only dictate the punishment a broadcaster faces for breaking that law. It is unnecessary for indecent content to be repeated many times in order to be actionable, and it is unwise for the FCC to pursue a new course that will guarantee nothing but a rash of new litigation.

“We are encouraging the public to share its concern with the FCC in a public comment by the deadline of May 20. To date, over 90,000 public comments have been filed, most of them expressing outrage that the FCC would even consider such a proposal.

“If this proposal is adopted, the greatest harm will fall upon our children and grandchildren, who already face waves of explicit content when they use the airwaves of which they, too, are co-owners. The FCC proposal erodes a parent’s recourse for broadcast decency enforcement and, instead, cedes control of our airwaves entirely to the entertainment industry. It’s time to say #NoIndecencyFCC!” Winter concluded.

Sadly, the decency boat has sailed in public life. The PTC might as well propose a #NoCreepyTattoo” week or a #NoHideousPiercing week. The eyeballs of families and children everywhere are assaulted daily with unpleasant bumper stickers, profane t-shirts, ear gauges, and slut ware. It’s a world gone mad, but TV is supposed to remain squeaky clean.

The PTC floods the FCC with complaints. I am on the side of the FCC on this one.

Since when TVNewsCheck became the PTC’s PR agent?

I agree, it gives far too much prominence to PTC’s activities. No need to constantly give the text of PTC’s press releases or PR efforts. It’s enough to remind us it’s out there and to summarize the latest fallacious point it is trying to make.

The PTC is an anachronism. Cable, satellite and the internet have made content of all kinds assessable to everyone of all ages and at any time. The FCC has its “Safe Harbor” rule. That’s sufficient. Anything the PTC would propose beyond that is outmoded, unrealistic, impractical and smacks of “nanny-ism”.

“Sadly the decency boat has sailed……….”. What a sad comment. Talk about giving in to the immature, profane producers of this, oh what do they call it…oh, “cutting edge, pushing the envelope” creativity I think it’s labled. The fact is that the most powerful medium on the planet through quality entertaining, thoughtful, informative, yes even intelligently produced controversial programs could reverse this unfortunate slide to mediocrity and regenerate a more civilized and yes a more polite and informed society. Of course, the key is finding talented and decent-thinking souls in the world of television and its cousins who have the guts to take the first step. I have never been able to fathom what quality of life benefits come from profane words and actions. Can anyone try to convince me? Also, what kind of a person is it that wants and supports bottom-feeding type programs. Kinds scary, if you stop to think about it pilgrim! I appreciate PTC for its attack on garbage while finding the FCC slowly being disembowled by those who are of the mindset as many of the posters above. Yep, so sad.
