The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is forging ahead with a way to recognize the best of this year’s film and television achievements despite the fact that NBC will not televise this year’s Golden Globes ceremony.

These awards honor the best examples from TV stations in the U.S. More than 100 judges from stations across the country chose 100 gold and silver award winners in 50 categories.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America will honor outgoing NAB CEO Gordon Smith for his excellence in broadcasting at the Broadcasters Foundation Breakfast During the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

InterDigital’s Stein receives the Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award, while NAB’s Smith is presented the Mark Richer Industry Leadership Medal.

The awards will be presented to Byron Allen, Pierre Bouvard, Ralph Oakley, Christine Travaglini and Dennis Wharton at the Broadcasters Foundation Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 12, During the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The Radio Television Digital News Association will present Susan Zirinsky with the 2021 Paul White Award for her achievements in and contributions to the field of electronic journalism. The award-winning broadcast journalist first joined CBS News in the 1970s at the age of 20 two weeks after the Watergate scandal. In 2019, after a nearly 50-year tenure, she was appointed the first female president and senior executive producer of CBS News, which she held until April 2021. She now has a production partnership with ViacomCBS.

The organization will fete award-winning documentarian, journalist, speaker, author, philanthropist and host of Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brien during RTDNA21, Sept. 23-24.

The CW will simulcast the Sept. 12 Video Music Awards that originate on MTV, a ViacomCBS sibling of The CW. The event happens at the Barclays Center in New York. With the 2021 event occurring a day after the 20th anniversary of 9/11, MTV is collaborating with 9/11 Day for a series of service-oriented activities during the week leading up to the VMAs, promoting awareness and positive action in observance of the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

AT&T Chairman William E. Kennard, CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and NAB CEO Gordon Smith will be honored at the Media Institute’s Free Speech America virtual gala on Oct. 20.

PBS leads the nominations for the 42nd annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, as it usually does, this year scoring 52 noms over last year’s 48. Vice News Tonight, which topped all programs with 16 noms in 2020, equaled that number this year but is tied with CBS’s 60 Minutes.

The Television Academy has once again canceled the post-Emmys Governors Balls, and has also announced that the Creative Arts Emmys will return to the weekend before the Primetime Emmys telecast, and take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12. Just like the plans for this year’s Primetime Emmys ceremony, the live audience for the Creative Arts Emmys will be limited to nominees and their guests, and be held at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles’ LA Live complex.

The Celebration of Service to America Awards highlight and honor the exceptional community service exhibited by local radio and television stations across the U.S. Produced by the NAB Leadership Foundation, the 2021 program was presented as a televised program and is available for airing by local stations through Aug. 14.

The Peabody Awards on Tuesday expanded its award categories to recognize storytelling achievements across interactive, immersive and new media categories. An additional board of 10 newly appointed jurors, composed of industry experts, will lead Peabody in expanding the organization’s long-established pedigree to recognize works in digital and immersive formats.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has apologized for misrepresenting actor Marguerite Ray with a photo of living actor Veronica Redd in the In Memoriam segment that aired during the 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

The late Jeopardy host won as game show host and Jeopardy earned game show honors on Friday night. ABC’s General Hospital claimed four trophies, including best drama. The 30 winners of the 81st annual Peabody Awards were named this week during a multi-day virtual celebration.

KING, Tegna’s NBC affiliate in Seattle, earned a 2020 Peabody Award in the Public Service category for Facing Race, a 13-week original series that tackled the difficult topic of systemic racism in the Pacific Northwest.
