How The Onion Is Helping Univision Grow
In a move many in the industry expected, Univision took sole ownership Thursday of Fusion, which launched in 2013 as a joint venture with ABC. In doing so, Univision found a home for some of its recent English-language acquisitions including satirical news site The Onion and the African-American skewing The Root. The two properties will be under The Fusion Media Group. Mark López, EVP of Univision Digital, explains Univision’s English-language strategy.
Ricardo Bilton lays out a few key details about Univision and Fusion now that Disney is out of the picture. First, the millennial site is now part of a new Fusion Media Group division, which also includes The Onion and The Root. Reportedly, Disney and Univision also clashed over the brand’s edginess and “political tone.” But the move, along with Univision’s many recent ones in digital, is costly. Univision is $50 million in the hole to buy Disney out, and meanwhile Fusion had $63.5 million in revenue last year and $37 million in losses.
The initial public offering could raise as much as $1 billion, a team of Bloomberg writers reports, noting that the company is waiting for better market conditions to publicly sell its shares. Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG are leading the offering.
Univision won’t say how it came to assume the Disney-owned network’s stake in Fusion — which had been a joint venture — or, assuming it’s a sale, how much it paid. But it does say that it has already replaced ABC in distributing the network, and handling ad sales.

Spending on Spanish-language TV was slow to start the year, but the second quarter has been strong and political will soon give it a boost. Spanish-language TV outlets do well in Miami. Univision places programs among the local weekly top 25, regardless of language. But like most English-language TV stations, Hispanic outlets have seen ratings fragment over recent years, which has impacted the market.

As the booming U.S. Latino market reshapes everything from branding to prime time TV, the battle to capture Spanish-speakers’ attention is heating up in Denver. For this market’s 790,000 Hispanics, there has historically been one go-to TV source. KCEC, Entravision’s Univision affiliate, was by far the dominant Spanish-language station.
