At this year’s media tech compendium in Amsterdam, there was greater cooperation among vendors to ensure IP interoperability. On the business front, there was talk of zoned advertising and hyperlocal content delivery over the air with OFDM-based transmission systems such as ATSC 3.0. And on the technology frontier, all of the work to make Ultra HD a reality has begun to pay off with real-world applications, novel 360-degree acquisition (see the Nokia Ozo camera above) and new 8K implementations of OLED display technology.

Imagine Communications is tackling the ad regionalization issue for broadcasters delivering their signal over the top, introducing a new service built on its Selenio Video Delivery Edge and dynamic ad insertion products that makes it possible for major networks to target advertising on a region by region basis.

IBC 2016 has seen the announcement of several interesting investments, acquisitions and strategic partnerships by vendors eager to improve their existing offerings, attack new markets or do a little of both. Here’s a rundown of some of the major deals.

DVB, the standards organization that among other things developed the terrestrial TV standard which ushered in the analog-to-digital transition in Europe, has a new chairman, and he’s on a mission. “We need to redefine ourselves,” says Peter MacAvock, who took over as chairman in June. But one thing definitely not on the DVB road map to the future is a worldwide terrestrial television standard.
