While few broadcasters these days offer regular editorials, many are willing to aggressively investigate big businesses and political figures, and stand up to authorities to report the news to their communities.

NBC News’ Rich Greenberg has officially been named VP and executive editor of the NBC News Investigative Unit. Greenberg had been leading the unit on an interim basis since the departure of Richard Esposito in September 2016.

Working with Data Refuge, an organization set up to preserve climate and environmental data, Investigative Reporters and Editors has compiled an index of more than 100 datasets gathered by the likes of NASA, the Department of Energy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It’s not just the fear of things that are online disappearing,” Minshew said. “There’s also the fear that funding for data collection and hosting of data by the government will disappear in the near future.”

The Raycom Media Investigative Unit will partner with local investigative units across Raycom Media. It will be headed by investigative journalist Lee Zurik.
