College Athletes Sue Broadcasters, ESPN

The movement to compensate college athletes took a twist recently when a group of 10 collegiate football and basketball players sued not just athletic conferences, but ESPN and the broadcasters that reap a growing windfall from televising their games. A key hearing is scheduled in a federal court in Nashville on April 13, when a judge will hear arguments on whether to dismiss the class action suit brought by the athletes, or to allow the case to proceed.

ESPN networks and NBC Sports led the industry with 57 and 42 Sports Emmy Award nominations, respectively, as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences unveiled the 36th annual list of nominees. Time Warner Cable and Dodgers fans are facing a second season of silence from West Coast TV distributors who, so far, are balking at the price for carrying Time Warner Cable’s SportsNet LA, which carries the Dodgers games exclusively.

The NFL has protected its video as fiercely as any league, pushing most users to its website or to its broadcast partners. Today, the league and YouTube announced a partnership between two of the most powerful brands in the marketplace, creating an official NFL channel on the video website. Clips will also be directly viewable through simple Google searches.

GoPro And NHL In Wearable Camera Deal

Footage from GoPro cameras on players, referees and placed around the rink will be shown as part of the live broadcast of this weekend’s All-Star events. It’s the company’s first such deal with a major professional sports league. While GoPro would not comment on whether other partnerships are in the works, they would make sense.

Longtime ESPN Exec John A. Walsh To Retire

John A. Walsh, a fixture at ESPN since 1988, will retire Feb. 1, sources there confirm. No reason was given for the move by the EVP and executive editor. A veteran sports journalist, Walsh is chairman of ESPN’s editorial board and helped launched ESPN The Magazine and ESPN Radio.

Sports TV Accounts For Most Cable Costs

Sports cable channels are expected to continue to weigh down the bulk of cable channel costs for pay TV providers — climbing at a faster rate than virtually all other cable channels over the next few years. On average, SNL Kagan says pay TV providers spent $1.03 per month per subscriber for sports channels in 2013, which will soar to $1.37 by 2018 — a five year compounded annual growth rate of 7.3%.

Lawmakers said Wednesday the New England Patriots should be able to play in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1 despite an investigation that found the team significantly deflated their footballs in last Sunday’s conference championship.  Even Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks fans in Congress said the game should go on after the Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts in the semi-final.
